Keeping up on status of pending security clearance?

What are some of the best ways to stay informed regarding the status of one’s security clearance? Thank You.

For most applicants there is no really good way to find out how your security clearance is progressing.

DOD employees, military personnel, and DOD contractors can periodically check with their security managers or company Facility Security Officers (FSO). With few exceptions, the security manager or FSO can access JPAS, the online DOD clearance/investigation database, which shows when an interim clearance is grant or declined, when OPM initiates your investigation, when OPM finishes the investigation and transfers the case to the appropriate Central Adjudication Facility (CAF), and the date of a final clearance determination.

There is a certain amount of queuing time during the investigative phase and the adjudicative phase, but in recent years this has declined significantly. It’s not possible to find out how far an investigation has progressed (unless you have contact with an investigator and he/she tells you) or what stage of adjudication a case has reached (except for totally clean cases, adjudication is a multi-step process). Generally if an OPM investigation is not initiated within 30 days of the request being submitted, an investigation remains open for 180 days, or a case is stuck in adjudication for more than 90 days and you haven’t received any communication from the CAF, it’s time for your security manager or FSO to make an inquiry.

Well Troy, nothing says you’re deserving of a security clearance more than posting your name and social security number on the Internet :-)
