DNI Ponders Closer Scrutiny of IC Staff
In an interview published in the January 21 edition of the New Yorker_, summarized herewright and in this column on page B5 of the January 14 Wall Street Journal, Mike McConnell is reported to have suggested that closer monitoring of Intelligence Community employees’ activities could shorten background checks.
This news may alarm some privacy advocates. Considering that delays in processing new security clearances are most severe, it is unclear how significant closer scrutiny of current clearance-holders will be to alleviating delays or otherwise improving the process, and suggests other motives for the increased monitoring.
