DDNI on Next Steps in Clearance Reform

Intelligence Community Inspectors General conferred at the Central Intelligence Agency on May 8. The Deputy Director for National Intelligence (DDNI) spoke about security clearance reform.

Among his key points:

  • The recent report to the President on security clearance reform was a joint effort by the Office of the Director for National Intelligence, Department of Defense, Office of Management and Budget, and Office of Personnel Management;
  • Clearance reforms focus on better use of automation, new sources of data, more focused use of traditional field investigation, and continuous evaluation of cleared personnel;
  • By June 30, the President will issue a new Executive Order specifying agency roles going forward;
  • Specific recommendations for improving processes for Top Secret/SCI clearances are forthcoming.
