DOE Employee Sues Over Revoked Clearance

An 18-year Department of Energy (DOE) employee is suing after his security clearance was revoked, according to a story in the June 27 New York Times.

ClearedCommunity.com first reported on this story here.

The employee, an Egyptian physicist and naturalized U.S. citizen, said DOE, citing “national security,” revoked the clearance but refused to reveal why.

In his suit, he claims violations of his rights to free speech and religion and to equal protection and due process. He says he was denied an opportunity to contest the revocation before an impartial hearing officer.

He says that in a three-hour interview with a DOE agent and a four-hour interview with FBI agents, he was asked about his religious beliefs, money he sent overseas, and comments he made at a mosque in 2006 expressing opposition to the Iraq war. He says he was never asked about any security breaches at his job.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote on the story here.
